Constructivist Learning Theory, Teaching, and Learning

To understand the relationship between constructivist learning theories, instructional strategies, and technology tools, there needs to be a solid comprehension of what these concepts are. The constructivist learning theory states that students are active builders of knowledge (Orey, 2001). In a sense, the child does not get a concept, but they create it. In order for them to do this, the teacher must use instructional strategies that are highly effective. Higher order thinking questions and graphic organizers are a couple of instructional strategies that can be differentiated to meet the needs of all students. Graphic Organizer for Virtual Field Trip

This graphic organizer was used in conjunction with a PBS Kids children's show called Cyberchase. In this episode, the children have to figure out how to add mixed numbers with unlike denominators. Before it was filled out, the students were introduced to the other aspects of fractions, like unit fractions, improper fractions, and whole fractions. After the video was shown, we mimicked what the kids did on the show and made our own examples. The students were excited to see the show and work together to figure out the problems. Behaviorist Learning Theory, Instructional Strategies, and Technology Tools

In order to have superb classroom management, there needs to be a strong interrelationship between behaviorism, instructional strategies and technology tools. There used to be a time when growing up, using the computer in school was a privilege, and only accessible when all work was completed. However, in the 21st century, almost every child has instant access to a computer. In my district personally, every child in grades 3 through 5 has their own personal device given to them. This now means that the teacher has to be creative in their teaching and with incorporating tech resources. "Part of the challenge with technology, is that we see a new tool and say, Let’s put it in classrooms. Tech becomes an add-on, as opposed to integral to the subject.” (Moorhead, 2014). This course has introduced me to new method of teaching I never knew was available. I came into this course with an open mind, ready to soak up any new information that would help me in my teaching. The most influential aspect of this course that helped me better my craft was creating the wiki. Never have I thought I would create a website, let alone, a website for my students to use. I assumed that only highly qualified individuals made wikis. Dr. Thornburg states "You don't have to be a master of every software that you use, & you don't have to know how to fix every aspect of your computer" (Laureate Education, 2015h). This made me realize that I should implement way more technology resources than I have in the past. The only thing that has gotten in the way were my personal barriers.        There are many purposes for using blogs in the classroom. One purpose of having a blog is to let your students feel comfortable with discussions via technology. Creating a post and allowing them to converse online is a new strategy that will engage the students in their learning. Another reason for having a blog is the connection it makes with the parents at home and the school community. A teacher who consistently updates their blogs will create an open line of communication that makes the parents feel aware of their child's actions at all times. Also, constantly updating your blog will make you seem very transparent with parents and that will make them feel at ease.          With the way technology is advancing in today's society, having children use devices in the classroom is a major advantage to their learning.
